Our Old Airport:

"This aerial view of the New Smyrna Municipal Airport was taken about 1939.  The airport was basically a flat open space that also served as a nine-hole golf course.  The clubhouse in the middle of the picture later became the control tower when the navy took over, and the runways were built to serve as an auxiliary airfield during World War II."

-- photo and quote from Lawrence J. Sweett, Images of America, New Smyrna Beach (Arcadia Publishing, 2006), page 96.

After the war, the airfield became a small general use airport.
